Bills’ Spencer Brown Defends Josh Allen After QB Takes Blame for Loss to Broncos

“We wouldn’t be here without Josh Allen,” Buffalo Bills RT Spencer Brown said in the locker room about his quarterback after the Bills fell in overtime of the divisional round of the AFC playoffs in Denver. The Broncos kicked a game-winning field goal to advance to the AFC Championship Game, sending the Bills back home to Buffalo after falling short in the playoffs yet again with the reigning MVP under center.

“That’s the leader [Allen] is, he’s gonna take the blame and be that front face for what happened here today,” Brown continued. “I’m pretty sure he got hit a couple of times, everybody just needs to do their job, and we wouldn’t be here without him. He’s a leader, that’s who he is, that’s what he’s going to say, but we wouldn’t have a shot in hell to win a football game without him back there. Yeah, I love the guy.”

Allen committed four turnovers in the loss, throwing two interceptions and fumbling three times (losing two of them). Bills RB James Cook added a fumble of his own to bring the team total to five turnovers, a quantity that ultimately proved too much to overcome on the road in the playoffs. But Brown isn’t the only Bills offensive lineman coming to his quarterback’s defense, as Bills LT Dion Dawkins got emotional defending Allen after the game.

“Just super proud of the guys this year,” Brown said on Buffalo’s effort and resilience. “We played a lot of games like that, coming from behind, and it’s just a testament to this team that we play until the end. Whether we’re up or we’re down, we just play with a next play mentality.”

“I’m just super proud of everybody who played their ass off today. It was impressive. And the head coach says teams will beat themselves more than they’ll go out and whoop the other team, and we were and that was us today. You can’t expect to win with [five] turnovers. We were just lucky to be there in the end, with a shot. We just didn’t capitalize.”

“I mean, when your leader’s out there giving everything he’s got — and we know [Allen is] banged up. I got into an argument with an official today, trying to protect him, because [the Broncos] were just hitting guys,” Brown said.

“You try and keep him upright as much as possible, but that’s a tough-ass dude. That’s a guy you want to play for, that’s why our team plays so hard. Because we know whenever 17 is back there we’ve got a shot. I’m gonna say it again: we wouldn’t be in this position without him. I know he’s probably gonna get criticism for what happened today, but onto next year. We’re not dead. We’ll keep moving.”

Buffalo Bills RT Spencer Brown on the Officiating in the Broncos Game

“You can’t blame the officials,” Brown said after the game. “That’s not what I try to do. But you’re letting guys play all game long. I was holding the piss out of some people today and they didn’t call it. There was a third down right there before we kicked the field goal that I was holding [Broncos ED Jonathon Cooper] hard and they didn’t call that.

“No, they’re letting the boys play, but that’s a well-coached team and they knew where we were at, and where they were at on the field, and I think those passes were not really technically thrown to be caught,” Brown said on the pass interference penalty on the Broncos’ final drive that set up the game-winning field goal. “I think they were thrown to go out there and make us make a mistake and get a little help from the zebras. But I thought they called a good game the whole time and those things are going to happen.”
