Bears could shuffle O-line, put Joe Thuney at left tackle vs. Rams

The Bears could shift all-pro left guard Joe Thuney to left tackle Sunday to protect Caleb Williams’ blindside against the Rams’ pass rush.

A source confirmed late Saturday the Bears have considered the move, which would have Thuney fill in for Ozzy Trapilo, who was lost for the season with a knee injury a week ago. Theo Benedet, who started eight games this year, took his place in the eventual 31-27 win against the Packers. The Bears promoted Braxton Jones from injured reserve earlier in the week, but the veteran hasn’t started since Week 4.

When his Chiefs struggled at left tackle last year, they moved Thuney from guard in Week 15. He played there all the way through the Super Bowl.

Were Thuney to play tackle, the Bears likely would put either rookie Luke Newman or vet Jordan McFadden at left guard. Neither has started a game this year.

Also Saturday, the Bears promoted tight end Nikola Kalinic from the practice squad. He’ll mostly play special teams.
