49ers Receive Bold Bills Trade Idea Involving HC Kyle Shanahan

Would the Buffalo Bills, who are searching for a new head coach, consider making a trade with the San Francisco 49ers for Kyle Shanahan? The answer is probably not, but it’s not unheard of for NFL teams to make trades for head coaches.

The Bills decided to part ways with Sean McDermott after another season in which Buffalo failed to reach the Super Bowl. As a result, they’ll be looking for a guy who can get them over the hump and into the big game while they have Josh Allen in his prime years.

As a result, WKBW Buffalo’s Dom Tibbetts and Matt Bove listed the candidates the Bills should consider in an article published on Jan. 19, and one name they mentioned is Shanahan’s.

“With one year left on his contract, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan brings up a really interesting scenario,” the article noted. “What if Buffalo traded for the long-time head man?

“Shanahan has been the head coach in San Francisco since 2017 and, before that, had been an offensive coordinator with Washington and Houston dating back to 2008. It’s hard to find a guy with this much head coaching and offensive experience all rolled into one. Would the 49ers be willing to possibly trade their head coach? And what would Buffalo have to give up in return?

“It’s a wacky scenario to consider, but anything is possible, and if the Bills feel like experience as a head coach is still at the forefront of things they’re looking for in their new head coach, Shanahan is among the best.”

Niners Must Bolster O-Line This Offseason

Nonetheless, barring an offer that the 49ers or even Shanahan can’t refuse, it’s likely he remains in the Bay Area. As a result, the Niners need to improve their team if they want to get to another Super Bowl and win the competitive NFC West.

Former 49ers quarterback Steve Young highlighted a major concern he noticed with the team: the offensive line. He believes that strengthening that unit could help San Francisco get the most out of Brock Purdy.

“Well, every quarterback needs an offensive line, and they’ve got to be Top 10,” Young Said during a Jan. 22 appearance on KNBR. “With Trent [Williams] in the game, are they Top 10? I’d say it comes and goes. I thought they had some great games this year, but we need to get back to the 2019 offensive line, where we’re the best in the league [or] Top 3.”

49ers Need to Improve Their Weapons

Moreover, the Niners need to improve their weapons around Purdy. Christian McCaffrey is one of the few players that the signal-caller leaned on this past season. McCaffrey had 311 carries for 1,202 yards and scored 17 touchdowns in 17 games this season, per StatMuse.

As a result, Young doesn’t want the 49ers to lean heavily on McCaffrey next season.

“We don’t need speed as much as other squads because we have a lot of tactics,” Young added. “But it can’t be the Christian McCaffrey show. We know that. That’s asking too much of Christian, way too much of Christian. I think it affects Christian’s running game. I don’t think we get the full measure of Christian as a runner when he has to do six other things.”
