The NFL Draft, which is being hosted by the city of Pittsburgh, is a week away. This is usually when it is announced that current and former NFL players will be announcing the draft picks for each of their teams in the later rounds. For the San Francisco 49ers, one of their best special teams players in history will be announcing their second-round pick.
According to ESPN senior insider Adam Schefter, the 49ers will have former punter Andy Lee announce the 58th overall pick. Lee was drafted in the sixth round out of Pittsburgh in 2004 by San Francisco and spent the first 11 years of his 19-year career with the club.
Andy Lee Won’t Be the Only Former San Francisco 49ers Star to Announce Draft Picks
GettyAfter his time was over with the 49ers, Andy Lee spent time as the punter and holder for the Cleveland Browns, Carolina Panthers, and Arizona Cardinals.
Lee truly was one of the best in the game during his long career, especially in San Francisco. He was named a four-time All-Pro and led the league in punting yards twice while in the Bay Area. Furthermore, he had the most punts in the league four times and also led the league in yards per punt twice.
Of course, Lee is not just the only former player to announce draft picks next week in Pittsburgh, but he is also not the only former 49er to announce picks. Former 49ers running back Brian Westbrook, who spent much of his career with the Philadelphia Eagles, is going to announce an Eagles draft pick. Westbrook spent the final season of his career with the Niners in 2010 and recorded 490 scrimmage yards, along with five touchdowns.
Another former 49er who will be announcing a draft pick is former NFL receiver and return man Tavon Austin. He will be announcing a draft pick for the arch-rival Los Angeles Rams. The former first-round pick spent part of the 2020 season with the 49ers. Unfortunately, he was placed on injured reserve early in the season and ended up being released without making much of an impact.
The 49ers Have Six Draft Picks This Year

This will be an intriguing NFL Draft for the Niners and their fans. They are coming off a 12-win season and made major moves in free agency. Most notably, they signed future Hall of Fame wide receiver Mike Evans to a three-year deal. With star players such as All-Pro edge-rusher Nick Bosa, All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner, and All-Pro tight end George Kittle all making their way back from major injuries, the team is only going to have so many more bites at the Super Bowl apple. Age and injury history are not on this team’s side.
With the 49ers’ lack of draft picks, this team only has so many ways left to add to its roster. GM John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan will have to be smart with each of their remaining picks.
