Josh Duggar is on the Move in the Federal Prison System Again: Unraveling his Transfers

Josh Duggar had been ensconced inside the walls of a federal prison in Texas since June 2022, when he was transferred from a local Arkansas detention center. It looked like he’d serve out his sentence at FCI Seagoville, then he was suddenly transferred earlier this year. Since that unexpected movement, he’s been shuttled to two more prisons, and each one gets him further from his Arkansas home state. This is everything we know so far.

Following his conviction on possessing and receiving child pornography, Josh Duggar was sentenced to 151 months inside a federal lockup. He headed to FCI Seagoville shortly after his May 2022 sentencing. That changed on May 29, 2026. The Bureau of Prisons inexplicably transferred him to the Federal Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas. The move was a surprising one. Josh did not have any medical ailments going into custody that would necessitate treatment at a medical center, and his lawyer insisted he remains perfectly healthy. The facility he was moved to is one that typically houses inmates requiring specialized medical or psychological care. No public explanation was given for that move, though that’s not uncommon. The Bureau of Prisons does not discuss individual inmates.

His stay at the medical center was not a long one. In June, Duggar was on the move again. Records show he was transferred to the Federal Transfer Center in Oklahoma City. The facility is not a permanent stop for inmates. Instead, it is used to process and classify inmates as they are moved around different facilities.

He was at the facility for just a few days when he was moved again, this time to a federal lockup in Ohio. According to current inmate records, Josh has been moved to Elkton Federal Correctional Institution in Lisbon, Ohio. The facility is nearly 1,000 miles from his hometown of Springdale, Arkansas, where his wife and seven children still reside.

It is unclear if the move is permanent or if this stop is a holdover, too. The low-security prison houses a variety of male offenders.

What His Lawyer Has Said

Duggar’s attorney, Beau Brindley, initially described the first move, from Seagoville to Fort Worth, as a “routine” transfer, telling TMZ his client was “fine.” That characterization didn’t last. After speaking further with Duggar, Brindley reversed course. Days later, he told the outlet he believed the move was retaliatory in nature.

According to Brindley, the moves stem from a court incident in which Duggar allegedly called into question FCI Seagoville’s mail system. Brindley has also alleged that officers at Seagoville deleted Duggar’s list of approved contacts, cutting off his ability to communicate with people he’d previously been cleared to reach. The BOP has opted not to comment on the move or the allegations. Brindley has a history of raising concerns about correctional officers in federal prisons. He alleged R. Kelly, who is also a client, was the victim of a murder-for-hire plot set into motion by correctional officers at his prison.

Is This Level of Movement Common?

Prisoner transfers themselves are far from unusual. The Federal Bureau of Prisons operates more than 200 facilities and processes tens of thousands of inmate movements every year. Research on state and federal systems suggests nearly 75% of incarcerated people are moved between facilities at some point before release. Roughly 12% of people serving time end up in five or more facilities over the course of their sentence.

What’s more unusual is the pace of Duggar’s transfers. Three transfers in roughly six weeks, without a clearly stated reason from the Bureau of Prisons, is faster than the typical inmate experiences. Still, Duggar’s stop at the medical center might have something to do with the speed at which he was moved. If medically cleared at the facility, the BOP would be looking to ship him out quickly.

Josh Duggar has not spoken out since the move.
