3 hurt when SUV hits cyclist, fire hydrant, fence in Gage Park neighborhood

Three people were hurt when an SUV rear-ended a cyclist before hitting a fire hydrant and a fence around a car dealership late Thursday on the Southwest Side.

The crash happened around 11:40 p.m. in the 5800 block of South Western Avenue when a 22-year-old cyclist was struck from behind by a black SUV, Chicago police said.

The driver then struck a fire hydrant and struck the fence of a car dealership, causing the SUV to roll over, police said.

The 25-year-old driver was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where his condition wasn’t immediately known, officials said. A male passenger in the SUV was taken to the same hospital with minor injuries and was in fair condition.

The cyclist suffered cuts to left arm and trauma to his body and was also taken to Mount Sinai where he was in fair condition, police said.

The Major Accidents Investigation Unit was investigating.
