The new show – which debuted Saturday on Hallmark+ – tells the story of the founding of the town that will one day become Hope Valley. It follows a widowed woman named Rebecca Clarke (played by Bethany Joy Lenz) who travels to the Canadian frontier with her young daughter in search of a fresh start.

In the series premiere, Rebecca discovers that the boardinghouse she purchased sight unseen is a decrepit mess. As she tried to decide on her next move after being swindled, she connects with some of the local residents, including a rancher named Tom Moore (Benjamin Ayres) and a pioneer woman named Hattie Quinn (Jill Hennessy), who runs the local trading post. She also meets a young couple, Miles (Grayson Maxwell Gurnsey) and Rachel (Matreya Scarrwener), who are prospectors expecting their first child.

When Rachel goes into labor, Hattie turns to Rebecca for help delivering the child. Fortunately, the birth goes smoothly.

“Edmund,” the happy mom says as she cradles her little one. “But we’ll call him Ned.”

“Ned Yost is a fine-sounding name,” Hattie says.

“He’s going to make something of himself,” the proud dad chimes in.

That’s right – the newest resident of this frontier outpost is none other than Ned Yost, who will eventually grow up to be the owner of Yost’s Mercantile and Yost’s Pharmacy. Ned has been part of When Calls the Heart since the first season. He’s an important part of the Hope Valley community and – as his father predicts – a man who makes his mark on the world, as seen when he invents adhesive bandages in a season 8 episode.

Will other ‘When Calls the Heart’ characters get a mention in prequel series?

So far, Ned is the only character from When Calls the Heart who’s gotten a mention in the prequel series. That’s not surprising, given that the original show begins in 1910 – more than three decades after the events of the prequel. Many of the show’s characters either haven’t been born yet or have yet to make their way to the Canadian West.

However, there’s a fair amount we don’t know about the background of some of the people in When Calls the Heart. It’s possible that we could see younger versions of these characters, or get to know their parents. Henry Gowen, for example, was already established in Hope Valley (then called Coal Valley) as the mining company manager in the show’s first season. Hope Valley: 1874 could introduce a much younger Henry, providing more details about his backstory and fleshing out his story.
