Yankees’ Will Warren Gets Positive News on Future as Cole, Rodon Return Looms

The New York Yankees are expected to keep Will Warren in the rotation for the foreseeable future.

New York will have to make some tough decisions on the rotation as Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon are closing in on a return. Once the star pitchers return, the Yankees will have to make some tough decisions on who goes to the bullpen.

Will Warren’s name has come up as a potential bullpen option. Yet, he has pitched well, and Yankees insider Brendan Kuty of The Athletic expects Warren to remain in the rotation even once Rodon and Cole return.

“It may be a few weeks before the return of lefty Carlos Rodón to the New York Yankees’ rotation, and ace Gerrit Cole should not be far behind,” Kuty wrote. “When they arrive, the Yankees will have to kick two of their current starters to the bullpen or to Triple A. If Will Warren keeps up anything close to what he did Saturday, he won’t have much to worry about. …

“Weathers and Gil are Warren’s main competitors to remain in the rotation when Cole and Rodón return. Max Fried and Cam Schlittler will keep their spots. Warren also has the added advantage of having proven durable after making 33 starts (4.44 ERA) last year, tying for the most in the American League. … Warren might have the least reason to be looking over his shoulder.”

The right-hander has pitched well, and Kuty expects Luis Gil and Ryan Weathers to likely end up in the bullpen if there is no trade.

Warren is 2-0 with a 2.49 ERA in 5 starts this season as he’s been stellar to begin the year.

Yankees Praise Warren

Warren has pitched well this season, and his teammates and manager are impressed with him.

The right-hander has pitched well in Cole and Rodon’s absence, and it’s impressed Yankees manager Aaron Boone.

“I thought the four-seam was really playing well for him,” Boone said. “He got a lot of swing-and-miss with that. I thought his changeup was good today, and then just overall … I thought he spun the ball well.”

Yankees catcher JC Escarra, meanwhile, believes Warren has what it takes to be a dominant pitcher in the MLB.

“When he’s in the zone,” catcher JC Escarra said, “he’s lights out.”

New York selected Warren in the eighth round of the 2021 MLB Draft.

Cole and Rodon Closing in on Return

New York’s rotation is expected to get a big boost with Cole and Rodon returning from injuries.

Cole went 4.1 innings in Double-A on Friday and threw 44 pitches. Yet, he’s expected to make a couple more starts before returning to the MLB.

“We’ll probably want him to get up to a certain amount and probably repeat that even once he gets up there, so nothing is imminent here. We’ll make sure we’re disciplined and take the right amount of time,” Boone said.

“Coming off a year where not only he’s rehabbing and coming back from a major surgery, but that means no innings, so we want to put him in a position where he’s not only ready to go at the start, but he’s able to carry that throughout.”
