Bucks Shut Down Giannis’ Major Request Before Likely Trade

The Milwaukee Bucks refused to clear Giannis Antetokounmpo to play the final home game of the season against the Brooklyn Nets. Giannis reportedly wanted to play the game to share the court with his brothers Thanasis Antetokounmpo and Alex Antetokounmpo since they’ve been getting more playing time with quite a few players ruled out. Many also believe that Giannis wanted to play his final game in Milwaukee since a trade is expected this summer.

ESPN reported the following about the Bucks’ action:

“The Bucks have officially ruled out Giannis Antetokounmpo for Friday night’s matchup vs. the Nets, Milwaukee’s final home game of the season. With one more game remaining on their schedule Sunday, Giannis will head into the offseason with one guaranteed year remaining on his contract before a player option in 2027.”

ESPN referenced Antetokounmpo only having one more guaranteed year on his contract and the team looking to trade him if he doesn’t sign an extension. Giannis has gone back and forth between wanting to show loyalty to the only American home he’s ever known and wanting to contend for NBA Championships again. Both sides are reaching the point of realizing a trade is the only way for both parties to be happy moving forward.

Why Milwaukee Refused To Clear Giannis

The drama between the Bucks and Antetokounmpo will end in a few days, but the second half of the season showed too much tension. Milwaukee wanted Giannis to sit out these remaining games once they fell out of play-in contention since there is literally nothing to play for.

Losing actually helps the Bucks since this is a rare year where they fully own their draft pick and are currently projected to land a top ten prospect. However, Antetokounmpo wants to play to prove he’s a competitor and to get possibly his final chance of sharing the court with his brothers in the NBA.

Milwaukee has tried to appease Giannis too much in the past to their detriment at times by making moves for Kyle Kuzma and Myles Turner. Bucks’ management decided to prioritize their future via the draft odds and to keep Antetokounmpo healthy for his best possible value on the trade block.

Is There Any Chance Giannis Stays In Milwaukee?

Last offseason saw Giannis claiming the New York Knicks were the only team he’d extend his contract with via a trade, or he’d prefer to stay in Milwaukee otherwise. Despite the tense moments of drama this season, Antetokounmpo has talked about why he loves playing in Milwaukee.

Moving there as a young adult saw Giannis spending his entire adult life in one place and leaving for a new start elsewhere will be difficult for his family. However, even the familiarity of being home is no longer outweighing the cons.

Both sides are unhappy, and the Bucks seem more likely to move on and are no longer doing everything they can to appease him. Many teams will be interested to see if they can acquire Antetokounmpo. Milwaukee not giving him his request here means they are no longer putting Giannis above their own interests.
