Alabama Football Reloads Defensive Line With Transfers, Kalen DeBoer Sees Potential

Kalen DeBoer and the Alabama Crimson Tide coaching staff made it a point of emphasis to improve along the lines of scrimmage going into 2026.

Alabama made a major investment in its defensive front this offseason, adding double-digit defensive linemen and edge rushers through both the transfer portal and high school recruiting ranks.

According to Charlie Potter of BamaOnline, several of those additions are expected to make an immediate impact for the Crimson Tide. Most notably, Oregon transfer Terrance Green, USC transfer Devan Thompkins, and South Carolina transfer Desmond Umeozulu.

With Alabama in the middle of spring practice, Coach DeBoer likes what he is seeing so far.

“A lot of potential to set the front, let them play ball. Not have to utilize pressures and blitzes all the time to cause chaos in the backfield.”

Alabama is Replacing Key Starters from 2025

It’s not too surprising that DeBoer and Alabama attached the defensive line via the portal. The Crimson Tide lost several key contributors from 2025.

Among the notable departures were Tim Keenan, LT Overton, James Smith, and Qua Russaw.

Keenan and Overton are headed off to the NFL, while Smith and Russaw both transferred to Ohio State.

Despite those losses, Alabama remains confident in the group it is building for the 2026 season, thanks in large part to the size, versatility, and experience of its incoming players.

Alabama Can Improve from Solid Showing in 2025

Statistically, Alabama’s defensive front delivered a solid effort in 2025 but still has plenty of room to improve in 2026.

Highly Anticipated Decision Looms Large for Broncos’ Evan Engram

Last season, Alabama finished 28th nationally and sixth in the SEC with 33 total sacks. Against the run, Alabama ranked 37th nationally and eighth in the conference, surrendering an average of 126.87 rushing yards per game.

Yhonzae Pierre led the team in disruption with eight sacks and 14.5 tackles for loss and is set to return for his redshirt junior campaign.

While the production was respectable, it also highlighted areas where improvement is needed—particularly in stopping the run up the middle.

What Alabama’s New Additions Bring

The trio of Terrance Green, Devan Thompkins, and Desmond Umeozulu brings a little more disruption ability than Alabama has had the past couple of seasons, while also being able to stuff the run.

DeBoer believes that the new additions will allow the Tide defense to mix things up.

“We want to be able to mix things up, but you also want to be able to just play base with the guys and our personnel, I think with those guys (Green, Thompkins, Umeozulu), are going to allow us to do that. They’ve still got a ways to go, but I like the direction we’re headed.”

Looking Ahead to the 2026 Season

While DeBoer made it clear the group is still developing, the early returns from spring practice are promising.

The Crimson Tide will continue spring workouts on March 30, giving the coaching staff more opportunities to evaluate how quickly the new pieces can come together.

If the defensive front reaches its potential, it could become one of the most improved units on the roster—and a defining factor in Alabama’s success during the 2026 season.
