David Ford’s Wild Ride at Cognizant Classic

At this week’s Cognizant Classic, David Ford is showing players and fans alike that anything can happen over the course of a single round. The highs and lows of professional golf were on full display Thursday, as the young star suffered at the hands of one of the toughest stretches on the PGA Tour before delivering an unbelievable comeback that he won’t soon forget.

David Ford’s Wild First Round at Cognizant Classic

On the par-3 17th hole at PGA National’s Champion Course, Ford found himself amidst the infamous Bear Trap. The 3-hole stretch from 15-17 is widely regarded as one of the most difficult stretches on the PGA Tour schedule. Water lurks at every turn, and even the smallest mistake can result in full-blown disaster.

After finding trouble on the edge of the water, Ford made a risky decision. The 23-year-old took off his left shoe and stepped deep into the hazard to attempt a comeback shot. Rather than take a drop and limit the damage, he chose to go big.

Unfortunately, that gamble did not pay off. His ball rolled back toward him. Undeterred, he tried again, but Ford was forced to watch helplessly as the ball refused to cooperate, rolling right back to the water’s edge.

After putting his sock and shoe back on, Ford admitted defeat and made the long walk back to the drop zone. By the time he holed out, he had carded a quadruple bogey, turning what had been a steady round into a potential spiral. A seven-over score on a single hole at a course as demanding as PGA National can derail even the most seasoned veteran.

Fortunately, Ford, the 2025 Fred Haskins Award winner, persevered. Rather than allow frustration to control the rest of his round, he responded in the best way. After the painful 17th, Ford regrouped and rallied. In an incredible display, he holed out three consecutive shots across holes 2, 3, and 4.

The run included back-to-back eagles, and remarkably, he was able to leave his putter in his bag during the stretch. In just a few swings, Ford flipped the script entirely.

The turnaround was electric, and brought his scorecard back to life. What could have turned into a disastrous opening round instead became a show of true resilience.

At the end of the day, Ford signed for a one-over-par. An almost unbelievable result considering the quadruple bogey. He will kick off Round 2 tied for 68th, still very much within reach making the cut and advancing to weekend play.

Wild Weekend Ahead at Cognizant Classic

The drama surrounding Ford is only one storyline unfolding at the Cognizant Classic in Palm Beach Gardens this week. Defending champion Joe Highsmith has returned to defend his title, once again drawing attention for his unconventional, eyes-shut putting routine.

Meanwhile, recent first-time PGA Tour winner Jacob Bridgeman withdrew earlier in the week, adding another twist. With multiple other notable withdrawals and a volatile weather forecast looming over South Florida, this year’s tournament feels especially wide open. If Ford’s rollercoaster round proved anything, it’s that no lead, and no setback, is ever final at PGA National.
