Elana Meyers Taylor is having a moment at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Heading into the games in Milan, Italy, these events marked Meyers Taylor’s fifth run at the Olympics, but until now, she had always gone home without a gold medal. So, what’s Elana Meyers Taylor’s ethnicity and heritage, as well as her Olympic journey?

Meyers Taylor, of course, made history at the 2026 Olympics. On Monday, February 16, as a 41-year-old, she became the oldest women to win an Olympic gold medal in the women’s monobob. She earned the win in a harrowing finish, inching out Germany’s Laura Nolte for the honor.

She actually only beat Nolte by 0.04 seconds, but a win is a win. This marked Meyers Taylor’s first gold after winning silver and bronze medals at previous Olympics.

Elana Meyers Taylor’s is a Jamaican-Panamanian-Italian American. She’s also the most decorated U.S. Olympic bobsledder in the history of the sport.

“I am a first generation American- a proud Jamaican Panamanian Italian American,” she shared on social media a week before her run. “I am the daughter of an immigrant and the proud mother of two disabled sons and my story isn’t possible in most other places in the world. I am proud to represent the U.S. and I love my country dearly.”

She added in her post, “As an athlete, I have trained my entire life to find my weaknesses, hone in on them, and work to improve them. I have trained my entire life to work to get 1% better every day. And in that regard, I feel the same about my country.” She continued, stating, “As a country we are a work in progress, constantly adapting and changing and growing. We have our challenges but what makes us great is we are a people who work to make our country better- just like athletes who work daily to get better and win medals.”

Elsewhere, Meyers Taylor concluded her post stating, “So when you see me fighting on the Olympic ice this weekend to win a medal, know that I will equally fight for all of you.”


Elana Meyers Taylor: Family Moment

Meyers Taylor is also a mother. After winning the gold, she talked about her two sons, Nico and Noah, and told them that their mom was officially an Olympic gold medal winner.

“We went over all the signs beforehand, we went over bobsled, bobsled race, champion,” Meyers Taylor said after her gold win, according to the official Olympics website. “They know all the signs, they were well-briefed beforehand. But it didn’t even cross my mind that we would actually be using them.”

She added of her children, “I hope they remember this visually, and I hope they were able to take it all in, that visual memory, because obviously they couldn’t hear everything that was going on. One day when they’re a little bit older they’ll see it and they’ll know that their mom was Olympic champion.”

So, there’s a lot to her story. Meyer Taylor shows that persistence pays off. It’s her fifth Olympics and first gold win. That says it all.
