How far would you travel for one of the best pizza slices in the country?
Not far, if you live in the Bay Area. One of the most destination-worthy slices could be baking in the oven right now in Oakland, according to a new ranking from Fodor’s Travel.
The guide’s Kristine Hansen surveyed the country to find the “10 best slices of pizza that are so good you might want to plan a trip around them.” The results encompass styles from Neapolitan to Chicago cracker-thin to New York, which is what Mama’s Boy Pizza in downtown Oakland serves. It made the non-ranked list of 10 for its no-fuss slices, which include pepperoni, mushroom, burrata-hot honey and a couple of vegetarian/vegan options ($5-$7 per slice, or $36-$48 for a whole 20-inch pie).

“In prepping to open their pizza joint in 2023,” Hansen writes, “best buds Miles Palliser and Ezra Berman trekked to New York City to sample 44 slices within four days from pizzerias, hell-bent on developing a pizza-themed love letter to the Big Apple even from nearly 3,000 miles away in California.”
The folks at Mama’s Boy acknowledged their selection this week, writing on Instagram they were “honored to be amongst some of the best to do it.” (Liking that post were local fixtures Lion Dance Cafe and Boichik Bagels.)
What other nine places made the list? Here they are, and for the reasoning behind the selection, head on over to Fodor’s.
• L’Industrie Pizza (New York City)
• Pizzeria Mozza (Los Angeles)
• Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana (New Haven, Conn.)
• Pie-Eyed Pizzeria (Chicago)
• Pizzeria Bianco (Phoenix, Ariz., and Los Angeles)
• ‘O Munaciello (Miami and West Palm Beach, Fla.)
• Slice & Pie (Washington, D.C.)
