NFL Insider Blames Patrick Mahomes for ‘Lack of Fanfare’ Around Top Draft Prospect

A new perspective on the 2026 NFL Draft is drawing attention to Patrick Mahomes’ long-term impact on the league.

According to Fox Sports reporter Henry McKenna, Mahomes’ success has helped reshape expectations for quarterbacks, which may be affecting the level of attention surrounding a projected top draft pick. The comments come as Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza is widely expected to be selected first overall.

Patrick Mahomes’ Influence on Quarterback Trends

McKenna explained that Mahomes’ rise has shifted how teams evaluate quarterbacks. He pointed to a broader league-wide move toward dual-threat players who can extend plays.

“Nine years after the Chiefs drafted Patrick Mahomes No. 10 overall, his selection is still changing the landscape of the NFL,” McKenna wrote.

He added that Mahomes’ success has influenced how prospects are viewed. “In a roundabout way, I think Mahomes’ resounding success is the reason why there’s limited hype around Mendoza, the presumptive No. 1 pick this year.”

McKenna compared the current environment to earlier eras, noting that traditional pocket quarterbacks once dominated the league. He referenced Tom Brady as the previous standard and contrasted that with the current preference for mobility.

Mendoza is expected to be the first overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft, with the Las Vegas Raiders holding the top pick after a 3-14 season.

Despite that projection, McKenna suggested Mendoza’s style may not generate the same excitement as other recent prospects.

“That’s not Mendoza. He’s more of a Brady type — a pocket quarterback,” McKenna wrote. He added that Mendoza’s skill set is comparable to players like Jared Goff and Matt Ryan.

Mendoza still produced strong numbers, including 276 rushing yards and seven touchdowns in 2025 while leading Indiana to a national championship.

However, the current quarterback market has shifted. An NFL general manager told McKenna, “[Mahomes] definitely inspired a lot of people to find a guy like that. I think everybody’s trying to kind of get away from the stationary quarterback — the traditional pocket quarterback — because of the way these defensive fronts are nowadays.”

The Raiders’ 3-14 record secured the top selection, and the organization is in transition following the departures of Pete Carroll and Geno Smith.

Mendoza has been consistently linked to the Raiders by scouts and analysts, and he remains one of the few quarterbacks projected to go in the first round. Alabama’s Ty Simpson is another possible first-round option, though his status is less certain.

Kansas City Chiefs’ QB1’s Injury and Recovery Update

While discussions about Mahomes’ influence continue, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is currently focused on recovery from a significant knee injury.

Mahomes suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during the Chiefs’ December 14 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. The injury also included a torn LCL, which was confirmed by MRI.

He underwent surgery the following day in Dallas, performed by Dr. Dan Cooper, according to ESPN. The Chiefs later confirmed that Mahomes would begin rehabilitation immediately.

Mahomes addressed the injury in a social media post. “Don’t know why this had to happen,” he wrote. “And not going to lie, [it] hurts. But all we can do now is [trust] in God and attack every single day over and over again.”

Amid his recovery, Mahomes has also shared updates from his personal life.

On April 13, Brittany Mahomes posted photos from a family trip to a Texas farm with Mahomes and their three children: Golden Raye, Sterling Skye, and Patrick “Bronze” Lavon III.

“Go to a TX farm, invite all ya friends and fam🤍 the best weekend with our squad! 🙏🏼,” Brittany Mahomes wrote.

The images showed Mahomes without the compression sleeve or brace he had previously worn, revealing a visible scar on his left knee for the first time.
