The Los Angeles Rams have it on good authority that making a trade for New York Giants star Dexter Lawrence would be a worthwhile endeavor.
Former Rams offensive tackle Rob Havenstein, who retired from the NFL this offseason, is that authority. Havenstein, the final St. Louis Rams draftee to leave the team, is following former Super Bowl teammate Andrew Whitworth’s lead and stepping into the media sphere.
Freshly removed from the Rams’ locker room, Havenstein insists Lawrence would fit.
Rams Urged to Trade for Giants’ Dexter Lawrence

Havenstein suggested the Rams call Giants general manager Joe Schoen about a trade for Lawrence, so long as the asking price is right, when asked about which positions the Rams could target in the 2026 draft.
“There’s no really big holes in this roster. And so, it’s kind of best available. Me personally, I saw that, hey, Dexter Lawrence has requested a trade. I’m standing in the back of the room now, kind of throwing the hands up, like, ‘Hey, Rams would love to have you, big fella,’” Havenstein told Erin Coscarelli on the “Bleav Rams” podcast on April 15.
“People are talking about him kind of not having the production. It was like, ‘All right, you clearly never played Dexter Lawrence before.’ That man is a force. I have no insight on this. This is more of just as soon as I saw it, like, ‘Wow, that’d be pretty cool.’ Pair him up with a couple young, hungry edge rushers, and really can kind of shore up that middle. Get a big body in there. I think that’d be spectacular. So, if anyone’s listening to this, I think if he’s serious about it, and the price is right, man, that’d be a sweet addition.”
The Rams have the EDGEs in Byron Young and Jared Verse.
They also got further confirmation that Lawrence’s trade request is legitimate, despite being sparked by a contract dispute with the Giants.
Report: Dexter Lawrence Wants Out of New York
GettyDexter Lawrence #97 of the New York Giants reacts against the Philadelphia Eagles.
“Two sources tell me he does indeed want out of New York. But the Giants do not necessarily agree, and they don’t have to make a deal by next week,” CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones wrote in an intel dump on April 16.
“Here’s what I’ve gathered: The Giants do not seem too keen on paying Lawrence high-market price coming off his worst statistical season of his career, but they aren’t going to give him away. If they can get a great offer for him — something that includes at least a first-round pick — I think they will deal him.”
Jones added that any team acquiring Lawrence will likely need to extend him on a deal that is in the “high” $20 million range annually.
The financial ramifications are just one hurdle a Rams trade for Lawrence faces.
Jones noted that the Giants are by no means under pressure to move Lawrence outside of the players’ camp, noting that their potential willingness to accept a 2026 second-round and 2027 first could delay any decisions until Day 2 of the draft, which is April 24.
The chances of the Giants trading Lawrence would diminish beyond that.
“If we get through Friday night with no deal, I would not expect one any time soon,” Jones wrote. “Both sides can pick up where they left off on talks and try to find a middle ground.”
Rams Move on Dexter Lawrence Unlikely

From the Rams’ perspective, the Giants accepting a 2027 first could keep the option on the table. Rams general manager Les Snead said he does not anticipate trading the 13th overall pick for a veteran.
Moreover, the Rams already have Poona Ford.
Ford is an undersized but effective nose tackle and is under contract through 2027. The Rams must also plan for D-linemen Kobie Turner and Braden Fiske’s soon-to-be expiring deals.
That is all in addition to planning for an extension for wide receiver Puka Nacua and life after Matthew Stafford, even though a trade for Lawrence would fit Snead’s “all-in” approach. A Rams trade for Lawrence would be league-altering, even if it is unlikely at this juncture.
