SANTA CRUZ — A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of killing his girlfriend early Friday morning, after police said he was found sitting next to her body at Seabright State Beach.
Around 1:15 a.m., authorities responding to a report of a possible homicide found Samuel Brannigan Stone near the water at 1300 E. Cliff Drive
According to a recording of emergency dispatcher conversations reviewed by the Santa Cruz Sentinel, a man admitted he had murdered his girlfriend on the beach, strangling her with his hands. The recordings said Stone had his hands up when police arrived.

The female victim was identified only as a 21-year-old Santa Cruz resident. Emergency responders attempted to resuscitate the woman; she was them transported to Dominican Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said.
Stone was taken into custody without incident Friday morning, Santa Cruz Police Deputy Chief Jon Bush said in a report Saturday. He was booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail for first degree murder.
Bush could not be reached Saturday afternoon.
