DISCOVERY BAY — A jet-ski crash near the Discovery Bay Marina launch rap on Sunday killed a person, authorities said.
Two others on the jet ski swam to safety at a dock after the vessel flipped over about 1:30 p.m., according to a statement from the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies from the agency’s Delta Station and Marine Patrol unit responded.
Authorities did not identify the person who died. The sheriff’s office said that person was not wearing a life jacket despite not knowing how to swim and disappeared under the water following the crash.
The two who swam to safety both were adults.
About two hours after the crash, dive teams found the body and brought it to the surface. Personnel from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District and the U.S. Coast Guard also responded.
The sheriff’s office is investigating the crash as a fatal vessel incident and said it is ongoing. They said anyone with information can contact them at tips@so.cccounty.us or by calling 866-846-3592.
