Newark records its first traffic fatality of the year

NEWARK – A motorcyclist suffered fatal injuries when he crashed into a traffic island and signal last week in Newark, police said.

The crash happened around 11 p.m. on Feb. 19 near the intersection of Cedar and Stevenson boulevards, according to the Newark Police Department said. No other vehicles were involved.

The motorcyclist, identified as a 29-year-old resident of Milpitas, was taken to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Police said the cause of the collision is under investigation, but it appears alcohol may have played a role.
