Cutting landlines
endangers lives

Re: “AT&T looks to pull the plug” (Page A1, Feb. 8).

I am writing regarding AT&T’s proposal to discontinue landline phone service. I would like AT&T and the California Public Utilities Commission to consider how dangerous it would be for the elderly, disabled and ill customers, especially those who live alone, to lose their landlines. For those of us living alone who have a serious heart condition or are disabled, how would we obtain help if we were to suffer a heart attack or fall and break a hip when the power is out? We need our landlines.

For the elderly, our phones are not an appendage as is true for many younger people. I cannot hear my cell phone ring if I’m in another room, nor can I possibly answer my cell within the few seconds that it rings.

The CPUC needs to consider this move by AT&T very carefully.

Kumar bid for House

Re: “Crowded field raises more than $4M in bid to replace Rep.Eshoo” (Page A1, Feb. 16).

The story on the District 16 race for Congress gave prominent coverage for Sam Liccardo, Evan Low, Pete Dixon, Joe Simitian and Julie Lythcott-Haims with photos. Rishi Kumar was only mentioned at the end of the article as an afterthought.

Rishi came second in the last election against Rep. Eshoo with 43% of the votes, and he is the only candidate who does not accept donations from PACs, lobbyists or special interest groups. This should have been highlighted in your report along with Rishi’s photo.

King Tides Project
offers proactive steps

Re: “King tides swamp the California coast, gives glimpse at future sea level rise” (Feb. 9).

The California King Tides Project is a noteworthy initiative. It empowers citizens to document coastlines and water levels, aiding in the evaluation of sea-level rise. I applaud this project not only because it facilitates data collection on a large scale but also raises awareness about climate change.

While many understand climate change through news articles and expert opinions, actively participating in data collection offers a firsthand glimpse into environmental impact. Citizens witnessing scientists analyze results can motivate them to take proactive steps in safeguarding our planet. I hope this citizen-science project’s success could inspire similar efforts nationwide. For example, inland communities could track metrics like rainfall or acidity levels, while scientists could use the project as a platform for public education.

The California King Tides Project serves as a promising model for collective action, highlighting that addressing global climate change is a responsibility shared by all.

Russia’s heroes
honor Navalny

Re: “Mourners of Putin antagonist arrested in Russia as they pay final respects” (Page A1, Feb. 19).

We add Alexei Navalny to the list of opponents murdered by Vladimir Putin; and now he is arresting even Navalny’s mourners all over Russia. Are even these mourners a threat to Putin?

I hail these brave people who publicly honor their hero in whom they placed their hope for a free Russia.

Navalny’s family deserves to receive his body and bury him with honor. His widow, Yulia Navalnaya, states that she will continue Navalny’s mission. Dare Putin imprison her?

Biden should recall
House to finish work

Congress has left town for a two-week break with important work undone: aid to Ukraine; aid to Gaza and Israel; aid to Taiwan; and resolving border issues.

The president can recall them under Article II, Section 3 of the Constitution “he may, on extraordinary Occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them.”

He should keep the House convened until the Republicans do some real work.
