Correctional officers made the grim discovery around 3:15 p.m., the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. The inmate received life-saving measures, but he was ultimately pronounced dead at the jail by emergency medical personnel.

The coroner’s office will release the inmate’s identity once it has been confirmed and his next of kin is notified.

Initial information suggested the inmate died by suicide; however, independent investigations by the district attorney’s office, coroner’s office and sheriff’s office will determine the official cause of death, the sheriff’s office said.

“We understand the concerns and questions that may arise from any in-custody death,” the sheriff’s office said. “We want to assure the public that once the independent investigations are complete, the sheriff’s office will make the findings public.”
