The California Republican Party said it will ask the US Supreme Court to weigh in on the state’s new congressional map that favors Democrats.
A lower court in Los Angeles said last week that the new map is lawful and can be used in the 2026 midterm elections, rejecting a bid by the Trump administration and the California GOP to block the redistricting on the grounds that it was racially gerrymandered. The state party filed a notice of appeal late Thursday.
California leaders drew a new, temporary congressional map to favor Democrats in response to President Donald Trump’s call for redistricting in Texas, intended to help Republicans try to keep their majority in the House.
The Supreme Court recently cleared the way for Texas to use its Republican-drawn maps during the midterms. If the California map is similarly allowed, it would create a level playing field as both parties jockey for control of Congress. If it is rejected, Republicans would have a significant advantage going into the election.
