Berkeley sees first homicide of year as victim stabbed on University Avenue

Police in Berkeley are investigating the city’s first homicide of 2024 following a stabbing Sunday afternoon.

Berkeley Police said they received a call around 2:45 p.m. that someone had been stabbed on the 1300 block of University Avenue, about 10 blocks west of UC Berkeley.

“Officers responded to the scene and quickly detained one subject believed to be involved,” said Berkeley Police spokeswoman Officer Jessica Perry. “A victim was located nearby and declared deceased at the scene by Berkeley Fire Department personnel.”

Homicide detectives are probing the killing, Perry said, adding that no other suspects are believed to be at large, and police do not believe there is a continued danger to the public.
