OAKLAND – Longtime BART Board Member John McPartland announced his immediate resignation Monday, citing family matters, according to the commuter rail line.

McPartland’s term runs through Dec. 6. The board of directors has until May 27 to appoint a director to the District 5 seat. If no one is named by then, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors will have until June 27 to select someone to fill the vacancy.
The board of directors also has the option to call a special election, but that is not a “practical option” due to the timing of the November election, BART said in a news release.
The person appointed to the seat must be a resident of District 5, which covers Dublin, Livermore, Pleasanton and parts of Hayward and unincorporated Alameda County.
The appointee must run for election to the seat on Nov. 5 if they wish to continue serving beyond Dec. 6.
On Monday, BART Board President Bevan Duffy confirmed McPartland’s resignation and said he would put an item on the April 11 agenda to discuss next steps.
McPartland was first elected to the board in November 2008. Before joining the board, he was a BART safety specialist and a retired Oakland Fire Department fire chief.
