William Sawalich Becomes Youngest Rockingham Winner With First O’Reilly Series Victory

William Sawalich delivered a statement performance Saturday at Rockingham Speedway, charging from 14th to win NASCAR’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race — and became the youngest winner in track history.

The 19-year-old Joe Gibbs Racing driver led 80 laps in the 250-lap event, taking control late and holding off Brandon Jones to secure his first career series victory.

At a track known for punishing tires and rewarding long-run speed, Sawalich was at his best when it mattered most.

From 14th to the Front

Sawalich’s path to victory was anything but easy.

After starting 14th, he methodically worked through the field while early race control belonged to Corey Day, who started on pole and immediately established himself as the driver to beat.

Day swept both Stage 1 and Stage 2, earning a perfect 20 stage points and leading a race-high 118 laps.

But as green-flag runs stretched and tire wear became a factor, the balance of power shifted.

That’s when Sawalich surged.

Long-Run Speed Decides the Race

Rockingham’s abrasive surface turned the race into a long-run battle — and Sawalich’s No. 18 Toyota thrived in those conditions.

By the final stage, he had moved into contention. Once he reached the lead, he never relinquished it.

Sawalich posted the fastest lap of the race at 23.59 seconds, a clear indicator of his pace as the laps wound down.

Behind him, the fight for position remained tight:

  • Brandon Jones finished 2nd
  • Justin Allgaier took 3rd
  • Rajah Caruth finished 4th
  • Carson Kvapil rounded out the top five

But none had enough to challenge Sawalich in the closing laps.

Corey Day’s Dominant Day Unravels

While Sawalich celebrated, Corey Day was left wondering what could have been.

After dominating the opening stages — winning both Stage 1 and Stage 2 and leading 118 laps — Day faded dramatically over the final run, ultimately finishing 10th.

It was one of the most striking swings of the race and underscored how quickly things can change at Rockingham.

Qualifying Speed Didn’t Translate to Victory

Day’s dominance began early in the weekend.

He secured the pole with a lap of 22.72 seconds (148.96 mph), narrowly beating Jesse Love and Parker Retzlaff in a tightly packed session where the top eight drivers were separated by just 0.14 seconds.

That speed carried into the early race — but not to the finish.

A Breakout Moment

Sawalich’s first victory is more than just a milestone — it’s a signal.

Winning at Rockingham demands patience, tire management, and execution across long runs. On Saturday, the 19-year-old delivered all three.

And in doing so, he didn’t just win his first race.

He announced himself as a driver to watch.
