Maybe it was the go-ahead goal Kiefer Sherwood scored against the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night. Or maybe the San Jose Sharks already knew they were going to sign him.
The forward was inked to a five-year contract extension on Wednesday, just two days before the NHL trade deadline on March 6. It’s an impressive turn of events, since there were rumors less than a week ago that Team Teal could flip Sherwood at the deadline.
More than anything, the signing offers a glimpse of the Sharks’ plans going forward
What Kiefer Sherwood Says About Being Signed
When it comes to getting a deal done with the San Jose Sharks, Kiefer Sherwood told the local media on Wednesday that he feels thankful.
“It’s been a whirlwind, and it’s a long time coming,” Sherwood said. “I’m just super grateful to be here, and to be part of someone’s future is pretty special.”
The 30-year-old winger has only been in San Jose for a little over a month since the Sharks acquired him from the Vancouver Canucks. Sherwood hasn’t spent more than two seasons with a team, so being able to plant some roots is important to him.
“I’ve kind of bounced around looking to find a home,” he admitted. “So I’m just super grateful and excited. I know we’re building towards something special here, and just to be part of that, and the future, and helping everyone along the way… It’s pretty cool.”
What This Means for the San Jose Sharks
Sharks general manager Mike Grier echoed Sherwood’s comments in his media release earlier in the day.
“We are very excited to have Kiefer remain in San Jose and be part of the group that we are building,” he said. “The ingredients he brings to our line-up on a nightly basis blend extremely well with the skillsets of his teammates, and we look forward to his contributions in the years to come.”
San Jose is indeed in building mode and sitting just outside of a wild-card spot in the Western Conference. The young roster has grown around players like Macklin Celebrini, Will Smith, and William Eklund. They’ve also gotten a massive boost in net this year with the underrated tandem of Yaroslav Askarov and Alex Nedeljkovic. (The latter of which hit highlight reels when he traded haymakers with Sergei Bobrovsky.) Long story short: A move or two at the trade deadline could be the difference in the Sharks making the playoffs or not.
With another forward in Sherwood locked in, the Sharks can return their attention to beefing up the blue line. Mario Ferraro has dominated the Sharks trade rumors this season since he is a pending unrestricted free agent and could be on the move to a surefire contender on Friday. Fellow defensemen like Timothy Liljegren and Vincent Desharnais could also be trade pieces, although they are less likely to move than Ferraro, who is the longest-tenured player in the current Sharks roster.
Don’t sleep on the Sharks to make another move before the NHL trade deadline hits. Sherwood’s signing shows they are planning for the future, and that could include immediate boosts so they can make the playoffs.
