The New York Mets are formally going through the process of introducing newly acquired starting pitcher Freddy Peralta to the organization this week. Just last week, the Mets pulled off one of the biggest moves this offseason by trading with the Brewers for Peralta and Tobias Myers in return for top prospects Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat.
With the introduction comes the opportunity for the New York media to ask Peralta some questions about various things, and non surprisingly, the question of whether Peralta is thinking about a contract extension came up on Tuesday. What were Freddy Peralta’s thoughts on a possible extension?

Freddy Peralta Shares Message About Contract Talks
Per SNY Mets’ X account, Freddy Peralta had this to say about any potential ongoing contract talks:
“I just got here. I think that I’ve got to… share time with my teammates, think about different ideas, learn about everybody, coaches, the organization in general, and then we can see.”

The idea of the Mets extending Freddy Peralta seems so obvious, especially when you consider that David Stearns is the last executive to hand him out a deal from when Stearns was an executive in Milwaukee. It would almost be a massive overpay if New York traded away two of their prized prospects for just one year of Peralta, who is set to become a free agent after the 2026 season concludes.
We’ve seen this situation in other instances where a team trades for a big-time starter and then signs him shortly after (most recently, Garrett Crochet).
One of the biggest reasons Peralta has flourished into the ace he is now is because of his ability to stay on the field and take the ball every fifth day.

Freddy Peralta’s Message About Durability
The Mets reporters also asked Freddy Peralta about durability, and here is what the two-time All-Star starting pitcher had to say about staying on the field:
“That’s the most important thing for me – to be healthy, to be ready every five days, to take the ball and go and pitch and be there for the team.”
Peralta has recorded 30+ starts and 200+ strikeouts in each of the past three seasons.
He’s coming off his best season as a pro, where he posted a 2.70 ERA over 176.2 innings, and finished fifth in NL Cy Young voting.
The Mets got the ace they had been searching for by acquiring Freddy Peralta, and expect his contract talks and demands to be a big focus for the Mets as spring training looms and the MLB regular season gets underway.
