Browns Star Myles Garrett Turns Heads With Cleveland Appearance

Myles Garrett was back in Cleveland on Saturday, but it’s still unclear whether he’ll take part in the Cleveland Browns’ voluntary offseason workouts next week.

The Browns’ star defensive end attended Game 1 of the Cleveland Cavaliers’ first-round NBA Playoff series against the Toronto Raptors at Rocket Arena, cheering on the team he co-owns as a minority stakeholder.

But with the Browns’ offseason program already underway and questions mounting about his future with the franchise, his presence courtside rather than in the weight room added another data point to an unsettled offseason narrative.

Garrett skipped the opening of Cleveland’s offseason workout program — a move that may cost him $1 million. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported that Garrett’s contract includes a $1 million workout bonus for 2026, one he must earn by attending at least 84.375 percent of offseason sessions, all minicamps, all OTA days and reporting on time to training camp.

The Browns will gather for voluntary veteran minicamp from April 21-23.

Browns Not Worried About Myles Garrett’s Absence

Cleveland is operating under a new staff led by first-year head coach Todd Monken, who replaces Kevin Stefanski. The Browns also have a new defensive coordinator in Mike Rutenberg. The early portion of the offseason carries more relationship-building weight than usual.

Monken played it diplomatically when asked about Garrett’s absence.

“First of all, as I’ve said this before, this is voluntary for our players to be here,” Monken said. “Myles will be ready. I’m not worried about Myles.”

But Monken didn’t let Garrett completely off the hook.

“Hell, I’ve been part of a team since I was five years old,” Monken said. “There’s nothing like it. I wouldn’t miss it because that’s me, that’s how I’m wired. But it is voluntary.”

Garrett has routinely skipped voluntary workouts throughout his career, and his preparation has never been in question. He set the NFL’s single-season sack record last season with 23.

Browns Still Dealing With Myles Garrett Trade Rumors

The Browns reworked Garrett’s contract earlier this offseason, pushing his option bonus deadlines from March to seven days before the start of the regular season — a move that, at least on paper, would make him easier to trade if the team ever chose that path.

Publicly, though, Cleveland has shut that idea down at every turn.

“If we wanted to trade Myles, we wouldn’t have needed to make a contract adjustment. So it doesn’t have anything to do with that,” Browns GM Andrew Berry said. “Myles is a career Brown.”

Even so, the messaging hasn’t completely erased the noise. Garrett backed former defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz for a head coaching job before the Browns pivoted in another direction. And he’s been candid about his urgency to win a Super Bowl, something that has felt increasingly out of reach in Cleveland.

It’ll be telling to see whether Garrett remains in Cleveland next week for voluntary workouts. It’s not typically his routine, but showing up would send a clear message to the new coaching staff — and the locker room — about his buy-in.
