The application process is now open for nonprofits that want to receive money from the Port of Los Angeles’ 2024-25 Community Investment Grant Program.
The largest grants can go over $100,000 and applications are divided between those “large grants” and “general grants”for under $100,000.
Since it began in 2014, the program has awarded nearly $11 million in grants to nonprofits to support events, programs and projects benefitting the Los Angeles Harbor community.
For programs and initiatives to be considered, they must focus on port goals related to:
Local maritime workforce development.
The environment and sustainability.
Public safety and security.
The LA Waterfront.
An applicant informational workshop is scheduled to take place at 6 p.m. April 10 via Zoom.
Applications are due by 4 p.m. Monday, May 6. Information on how to apply — and the application — can be found on the Port of Los Angeles website.
A committee made up of port, city and community representatives will review all of the applications. Funds for the grants come from port revenues, which are not supported by taxes.
The port recently announced the recipients of the 2023-24 grants. Those nonprofits varied widely.
In all, port officials announced on Thursday, Feb. 29, that 37 local nonprofits will receive $1.5 million under POLA’s Community Investment Grant Program for 2023-24. The recipients of the largest grants were the Boys & Girls Clubs of Los Angeles Harbor for its Wilmington Port Ocean and Land Awareness program; EXP for next-generation workforce development and education programs; and Los Angeles Maritime Institute for its TopSail education sailing program for at-risk youth.
AltaSea, Bridge Cities Alliance/San Pedro Pride, Friends of Banning Museum, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, and International Bird Rescue, among a couple of dozen others, were among other organizations selected for grants from among 65 applications.
