A trio of officials, including one from Japan, recently celebrated Read Across America at a Gardena school.
Alberto M. Carvalho, the superintendent of Los Angeles Unified School District, joined Consulate General of Japan Sone Kenko and LAUSD board member Tanya Ortiz Franklin at Amestoy Elementary School on Monday, March 4.
They teamed up to read a book to second-grade students at the school, which has a dual-language program in Japanese.
Read Across America, which the National Education Association started in 1998, is led by a committee of educators in what has become the nation’s largest year-round program to motivate children and teens to read. The program includes events, partnerships and reading resources.
This year’s Read Across America Week, meanwhile, began on Saturday, March 2, and runs through Wednesday.
Carvalho, Kenko and Ortiz Franklin read “Swimmy,” a 1963 picture book by Leo Lionni that’s about a fish who stands out because he’s a different color from his fellow fish.
