THE GAME: Mookie Betts and Trey Sweeney hit home runs but the Dodgers lost to the Cincinnati Reds, 5-4, on Thursday night at Goodyear, Ariz., to drop their second consecutive game after they were unbeaten in their first six spring games.
PITCHING REPORT: Left-hander James Paxton made his Dodgers debut, giving up a sacrifice fly for a run in the first inning before striking out the side in the second. He gave up two hits and finished with four strikeouts. Left-hander Alex Vesia had two strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning but also a walk and a wild pitch.
HITTING REPORT: The Dodgers had just a pair of walks into the sixth inning before Mookie Betts hit a two-run home run for their first hit of the game. Teoscar Hernandez had a seventh-inning double and Sweeney went deep in the eighth.
FIELDING REPORT: Shortstop Gavin Lux bobbled a grounder in the third inning for his second error in two games after also making a miscue Wednesday against the Texas Rangers. They were the first two grounders hit to Lux in his first three games this spring after missing all of last season with a knee injury. “I think that the (comfort on) defense is just continuing to log innings,” Manager Dave Roberts said of Lux before Thursday’s game.
