How to apply to volunteer at the 2028 L.A. Olympics

It goes without saying that the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics will be an exciting series of events. And it’s going to take an estimated 60,000 people to put it on for the world, including many local volunteers.

If you’re interested in volunteering, Olympics organizers are looking for three kinds:

  • People who want to volunteer at community events before the games
  • People who want to volunteer to work during the Olympic and Paralympic games
  • People who want to volunteer for both.

The Olympics will be here July 14–30, 2028, and the Paralympics take place Aug. 15–27, 2028

Aspiring volunteers will be asked about their interests when they sign up. Note that not everyone who applies will be chosen, and people will ultimately have fill out a long application and possibly go in for a live interview. The application process starts on Tuesday, July 14 and you can sign up now to be notified when it opens.

The games need volunteers to help with ceremonies, communications, driving, the experience, medical care, operations, sports and technology.

Warning: Organizers will ask you a lot of personal questions, and you’ll have to undergo a background check. Sorry, felons need not apply. Applicants will be asked, among other things, about basic personal details, past volunteer and sports experience, any specialist qualifications, preferred locations, clothing and footwear sizing.

To be eligible, applicants must be 18 or older, read, write and speak English, be able to work 10 shifts of 8 hours each (not consecutively) between March and August 2028 for the Olympics, or between August and September for the Paralympics. They also have to be available in person at Olympic locations: Greater Los Angeles, Oklahoma City, New York City, Columbus, Nashville, St. Louis, San José and San Diego.
