Firefighters save Baked Potato jazz club from flames in Studio City

A fire damaged a building on a commercial property early Tuesday morning that includes the Baked Potato jazz club in Studio City, but no one was hurt.

Firefighters sent to 3787 Cahuenga Blvd. at 5:28 a.m. doused the flames in 17 minutes, according to Nicholas Prange of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

“Firefighters found a detached A/V room with fire inside behind the main building, with flames threatening the commercial (building),” Prange said in a statement. “Crews quickly deployed hose lines to the rear and extinguished the flames, keeping them from extending inside the main portion of the business.”

The property includes the Baked Potato club, according to the LAFD, which reported that LAPD officers patrolling in the area saw smoke at the site and reported the fire.

The club was opened in 1970 by keyboardist Don Randi, 87 — a member of the famed group of LA studio musicians in the 1960s known as the Wrecking Crew, who played on countless hit recordings, including tracks by the Beach Boys, the Monkees, Sonny and Cher, and with numerous artists produced by Phil Spector that feature his “Wall of Sound” recording technique. Randi also recorded more than a dozen albums as a bandleader and continues to perform at the Baked Potato with his band Don Randi & Quest.
