A Timeless Fair Icon

Thummer, the endearing mascot of the LA County Fair, has been a cherished presence at the fairgrounds since 1948. Originally introduced as “Porky the Hitchhiking Pig” by artist Morrie Stewart for Kaiser Steel, Thummer quickly became the official mascot following a naming contest in 1952. Sporting a distinctive outfit and often seen carrying a briefcase, Thummer became synonymous with fun and adventure, captivating fairgoers of all ages throughout the vibrant 1950s and beyond.

In the 1980s, the Thummer legacy expanded with the introduction of “Mrs. Thummer,” enriching the fair’s mascot tradition. Despite a brief hiatus in the early 1980s, Thummer made a triumphant return in 1988 and has since remained a beloved symbol of the LA County Fair’s enduring spirit, evoking nostalgia and joy among attendees. Today, Thummer embodies the essence of community and celebration that defines the LA County Fair.

One of the most recognizable and sought after vendors is the creator of the famous fried oreo, Charlie Boghosian, owner of Chicken Charlie’s. This food wizard has been creating and serving delicious concoctions at the fair for 37 years. We sat down to talk briefly about his life in the fair industry:

Skyline: How long have you been in the fair industry, and what got you into it?

Charlie: 37 years. My father and I are first generation Americans, and he bought a grocery store in San Diego. I worked day, and night, but one day I saw an ad on TV for the San Diego Fair. I said to my dad, let me go work at the fair and call it my vacation just to get away from the store for a little bit. I was 14 years old, and I went and worked at the fair. I met a fellow that I ended up working for named Robert Jackson. He sold charbroiled corn, and baked potatoes at the fair. I worked for him for 12 summers while I went to school. Junior High, High School through College. After graduating I made the decision that instead of going into law enforcement, which is what I studied for, I changed last minute and decided to buy my own trailer. It just so happened to be a broasted chicken trailer.

Skyline: What spawned the idea for the fried Oreo?

Charlie: One of my favorite things on earth is going to McDonald’s and buying a Big Mac, and their apple pie. I was telling my brother one day that we don’t have dessert. We have fried chicken. I went to the Hostess rack at 7-11 and bought one of everything. My brother happened to have a box of Oreos at home. I fried those too, and I liked those the best.

Skyline: What’s new for this year’s menu?

Charlie: I made a funnel cake that’s about four inches in diameter, mimicking a bun, and since I’m Chicken Charlie, we fried the chicken breast, and I dressed it in a hot honey sauce. So this year, I’ll be serving a hot honey funnel cake chicken sandwich.

Skyline: What three items would make your perfect fair combination?

Charlie: I would say if they came to the Los Angeles County Fair, they need to have our fried chicken, charbroiled corn, and our deep fried Oreos.
