Election 2024: Updates on Los Angeles, San Fernando and Glendale local races

The standings in many of the local Los Angeles, San Fernando and Glendale primary races remained unchanged in the latest election results from the L.A. County registrar’s office on Friday, March 8. But two Los Angeles City Council races were closely watched.

Below are the latest results for local races in Los Angeles, San Fernando and Glendale, based on an update from the registrar’s office at 4:35 p.m. Friday. The registrar’s next update will be Monday afternoon.

In both the L.A. City Council and Los Angeles Unified School Board races, candidates must receive more than 50% of the vote to avoid a runoff on Nov. 5.

Los Angeles City Council

The leading candidates in three of the seven races – incumbents Imelda Padilla in District 6, Marqueece Harris-Dawson in District 8 and John Lee in District 12 – declared victory earlier this week.

In District 2, former Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian, with 38.06% of the vote, appeared headed to a runoff against either Jillian Burgos or Sam Kbushyan. Burgos had 18.95% on Friday while Kbushyan had 17.41% — a difference of 422 votes.

In District 4, Councilmember Nithya Raman, with 47.56%, built on her lead over Deputy City Attorney Ethan Weaver, who had 40.99% but was short the majority needed to avoid a runoff. Levon Baronian had 11.45%.

In District 10, appointed incumbent Heather Hutt led with 38.29%. Grace Yoo, a community advocate and former city commissioner, was in second with 25.24% in this five-person race.

In District 14, Councilmember Kevin de León, with 25.34%, remained in the lead and is on track to face tenant rights attorney Ysabel Jurado or Assemblymember Miguel Santiago in a runoff. Jurado, with 21.51%, pulled ahead of Santiago, who had 21.42%, on Friday. Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo remained in fourth place with 15.31%.

The Measure HLA campaign declared victory for its plan to spend up to $3 billion in city funds to reshape L.A.’s roads through “road diets.” It had 64.11% in the latest count.

Los Angeles Unified School District

In the District 1 race to replace retiring board member George McKenna, Sherlett Hendy Newbill extended her lead slightly with 24.71%. Khallid Al-Alim had 20.73%, DeWayne Davis had 17% and Didi Watts had 16.9%.

United Teachers Los Angeles dropped its endorsement of Al-Alim after word surfaced that he had “liked” or reposted antisemitic and sexually explicit social media posts. He apologized for his actions.

In District 3, incumbent Scott Schmerelson had 43.54%. Dan Chang had 29.23%.

In District 5, in the race to replace retiring school board President Jackie Goldberg, special education teacher Karla Griego had 33.69%, followed by Graciela Ortiz with 31.23%.

In District 7, incumbent Tanya Ortiz Franklin declared victory earlier this week. She had 55.63% Friday. Her opponent Lydia Gutierrez had 44.37%.

San Fernando City Council

Construction law attorney Victoria Garcia was ahead with 39.83%. Sylvia Ballin, a former mayor of San Fernando, had 32.61% and planning commissioner Sean Rivas had 27.56%. The winner in this three-person race will win outright.

Glendale

In the race for two at-large seats on the Glendale City Council, incumbent Ardy Kassakhian led with 22.17%. Vrej Agajanian had 17.68% and Vartan Gharpetian had 17.36% — 145 votes separating them.

In the Glendale Unified school board race, Telly Tse led in Area A with 54.93%, followed by Jordan Henry with 35.93%. In Area E, Aneta Krpekyan had 53.76% and Neda Farid had 46.24%.

The Glendale Community College board races included Trustee Area 1 where incumbent Desirée P. Rabinov was challenged by Harry Leon, Rabinov had 50.73% to Leon’s 49.27%. In Trustee Area 5 where incumbent Sevan Benlian faced challenger Armine Pogosyan, Benlian had 63.56% and Pogosyan had 36.44%.

Glendale Measure A appeared headed for passage with 60.39% voter support.
