Canyon track and field wins two individual titles at CIF State meet

Canyon was one of the most successful track and field teams at the CIF State finals in Clovis on Saturday evening and had two individuals take home titles.

Mikaela Warr became a state champion by winning the girls 100 meters with a time of 11.41 seconds. She edged second-place finisher Mia Flowers of Serra by a fraction of a second.

Warr also surpassed her previous personal record of 11.49, which was set at the CIF Southern Section finals on May 11, to become the No. 2 runner in the state in the event.

The Cowboys’ Jordehn Gammage won the boys 300 hurdles with a time of 37.35. It is the second-fastest time recorded in California this season, according to the athletic.net rankings.

Canyon had two relay teams in Clovis — the girls 4×400 team, which was seventh (3:50.25), and the boys 4×400 relay team, which also came in seventh (3:20.02).

Notre Dame, Johnson have big finishes

Notre Dame thrower Aja Johnson continued her path of success all the way to the CIF State finals. The junior won the discus title and came in second in the shot put.

Johnson held the third-best discus distance in the state of California heading into the state meet and tossed 158 feet, 10 inches to win the CIF title.

She was second-best in the state in shot put going into the meet and won second place with a mark of 46-8 3/4, which is just short of her PR set at the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet on May 18.

Paraclete’s Lillian Wilson also competed in discus at the state meet. She finished 11th (128-5).

Notre Dame sophomore Joshua Harel cleared 6-10 to come in second in the boys high jump and the Knights’ boys 4×100 relay team clocked 40.97 seconds to place fourth.

City Section well-represented 

Granada Hills Charter sprinter Jordan Coleman placed second in the 100 (10.43) and 200 (21.04).

The Highlanders’ 4×800 relay team logged 8:02.84 to finish 13th.

Deshawn Banks of Birmingham continued his winning streak in boys high jump by clearing 7-1/2 to beat Notre Dame’s Harel for first place. The two were the best boys high jumpers in the state going into the meet.

The Canoga Park girls 4×800 relay team was 15th with a time of 9:50.60.

Calabasas girls sprinters finish strong

The Calabasas girls were sprinters were at the top of the score sheets throughout the season and had a big finish at the state meet.

The girls 4×100 relay team clocked 46.08 to finish in fourth place and the 4×400 relay team logged 3:42.40 for second place.

Zoe Ray and Marley Scoggins competed individually as well. Ray placed seventh in the 400 (56.38) and Scoggins was ninth in the 100 (11.66).

Oaks Christian won the girls 4×100 relay (45.67) and Niya Clayton was sixth in the 100. …

The Chaminade boys saw success in the 4×100 relay wiith a fifth-place time of 41.08. …

Valencia dual-sport athlete Brian Bonner, who is also a running back on the football team, recorded 10.61 to finish eighth in the 100. …

Royal’s Olivia Kirk came in fourth in the girls 200 (23.88) and her teammate Quincie Richards was the runner-up in the girls triple jump (39-9 1/2). …

Castaic’s Megan Humphries was fourth in the girls long jump (19-1 1/2) and sixth in the triple jump (38-10 1/4). …

St. Francis boys distance runner Sam Franco was 15th in the boys 3,200 (8:55.82).
