The medical saga of the famed Big Bear bald eagle, Jackie, continues as she undergoes medical tests.
The eagle, globally known thanks to a continuous web broadcast, is back on oxygen assistance, according to a Wednesday, Aug. 5, update from the Ojai Raptor Center, a Ventura County wildlife rescue facility caring for her.
Jackie, who lived at Big Bear Lake, was found and rescued over two weeks ago after being reportedly grounded for hours after fighting two young adult bald eagles. Officials at the Ojai center said Jackie’s diagnosis and the condition that has weakened her remain unclear. The medical team, however, suspects Jackie may have been sick before the fight.
The Wednesday update also reports that the center performed more diagnostic procedures, including a CT scan and a bone marrow biopsy.
“Our veterinary team, together with our scientific advisory council and consulting specialists, are now reviewing today’s findings alongside her previous test results. Additional lab work is still pending. We will share a more comprehensive update once we have had the opportunity to review everything,” the update post states.
It has been nearly a week since the Ojai center reported that Jackie no longer required oxygen therapy, though a Monday, Aug. 3, update said her latest bloodwork “brought some difficult news.” Ojai medical staff said Jackie’s anemia had worsened and her packed cell volume – the percentage of red blood cells in the bloodstream – dropped.
While Jackie continues to fight, her 2026 eaglets seem to have left the nest for good, according to a Friends of Big Bear Valley Wednesday afternoon Instagram post. The Friends group operates the 24/7 livestream.
“Sandy and Luna were last seen on cam on 7/23. It appears they have left the valley on their grand journey,” the post read.
As for Jackie’s mate, Shadow, the Friends reports that he’s been hanging around less in the nest.
“With Sandy and Luna leaving the area, Shadow is on his summer vacation,” the post states. “He has been and will likely continue to be seen on camera occasionally. Big Bear Lake is about 7 miles long and has 15 miles of shoreline. Shadow has plenty of area to perch, relax, and he has no real need to remain in the habitat.”
Jackie remains a central focus of the group’s updates.
“We are all concerned about Jackie’s condition. It is important to let Ojai do their job without interruptions. Please do not call, text, show up at their doors, or demand frequent updates,” the post said.
