Alex Morgan joins USWNT roster for CONCACAF Gold Cup

The United States women’s national team has had to make a second injury replacement before the start of Tuesday’s CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup.

Forward Mia Fishel suffered an ACL injury to her right knee Monday and will be replaced by San Diego Wave FC forward Alex Morgan.

Fishel, who is from San Diego and attended UCLA, started her professional career in Mexico with Tigres, before making the move to Chelsea.

Chelsea said Fishel will be “assessed by a specialist in the coming days and will then begin her rehabilitation with the club’s medical team at Cobham.”

“I’m gutted for Mia and I know the team and the entire staff is as well,” U.S. interim coach Twila Kilgore said in a statement. “She’s been very effective in camp and has worked hard to make an impact.

“Since she’s been getting call-ups to the National Team, she’s shown a tremendous growth mindset, a desire to absorb information and has been a total team player. I know she’ll come back strong and hopefully be in the mix for the next World Cup.”

Morgan will be on the roster for tonight’s match against the Dominican Republic.

The former Diamond Bar High star has appeared in 215 matches for the USWNT, scoring 121 goals and adding 52 assists across her 15-year international career. Morgan, who is among the top 10 in USWNT history in goals, assists and multi-goal games, is a two-time U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year (2012, 2018) and four-time CONCACAF Player of the Year (2013, 2016, 2017, 2018).
