31st annual Pasadena Senior Games opens registration next week

Registration for the 31st annual Pasadena Senior Games will open to adults 50 to 100 years old starting Thursday, March 21, and for the first time will include a team fitness challenge.

The games will take place from Saturday, May 11 to Sunday, July 21, featuring 16 Olympic-style athletic events from table tennis to powerlifting at a variety of primarily Pasadena-area venues. Gold, silver, and bronze medals will be awarded in 5-year age categories for each event.

“Every year the Pasadena Senior Games promotes healthy lifestyles for older adults through education, fitness and the spirited competition of sports,” said Akila Gibbs, executive director of the Pasadena Senior Center. “These remarkable athletes are shining examples of the benefits of an active lifestyle that embraces health and vitality.”

Seven of the competitions will be state qualifiers for the 2025 National Senior Games, which will take place next year in Des Moines, Iowa, from July 24 to Aug. 4. Pasadena will host qualifying competitions for archery, cycling, race walk, road race, swimming, table tennis, and track and field.

The 2024 Pasadena Senior Games will also introduce a Fitness Challenge team competition. Competitors will visit seven fitness zones —  farmer’s hold, jump rope, dumbbell arm press, medicine ball sit-ups, push-ups, standing long jump, and stationary bike — and try to accumulate points for their senior squad.
