Yankees Urged to Pull Off Trade With Rival Mets for Former 18-HR Infielder

The New York Yankees and New York Mets have seen plenty of players change places as of late, and now the teams could make a trade.

Despite being cross-city rivals, the Yankees and Mets do make some trades every now and then. With the Mets off to a poor start, they could be sellers and look to recoup some assets. So, MLB analyst Stephen Parello of FanSided urges the Yankees to acquire Brett Baty from the Mets to potentially replace Ryan McMahon.

“Brett Baty was once one of the jewels of the New York Mets’ farm system, though it took him a while to prove his worth at the big league level,” Parello wrote. “He finally put together an above-average offensive season last year with a 111 wRC+. However, after that “breakout” season, the 26-year-old has been displaced by Bo Bichette and now has experience at second base, first base, and the outfield corners as well.

“He was rumored to be on the trade block over the offseason, and could be dangled once again at the deadline if the Mets believe they can swap him for a more useful piece, given their roster construction. He’s a lefty bat who had a reputation for big power in the minor leagues. That pop hasn’t fully manifested in the bigs yet, but perhaps playing his home games in Yankee Stadium could help unlock that.”

Baty could be a nice platoon bat and mix in at third base with McMahon and Amed Rosario. He’d also add more pop than McMahon is giving the Yankees.

Meanwhile, as Parello noted, Baty can play all over the infield, which gives Aaron Boone more options when creating his lineup.

Baty is hitting .197 with 7 RBIs to begin the season.

Yankees Expected to Bench McMahon

New York traded for McMahon at last year’s trade deadline, but he has struggled at the plate.

Although McMahon has given the Yankees some much-needed defense in the infield, his role with the team could soon be diminished. Yankees insider Phillip Martinez of SNY reveals McMahon will likely be on the bench for the next two series.

“The Yankees are still figuring out their third base situation with Opening Day starter Ryan McMahon struggling mightily at the plate,” Martinez wrote. But until they do, McMahon will be riding the bench.  Manager Aaron Boone’s lineup in the team’s series opener with the Royals has Amed Rosario starting at third. What makes that notable is that Michael Wacha, a right-hander, is on the mound for Kansas City.

“Now, Wacha is a neutral right-hander in his career, but it shows how poorly McMahon has hit — and conversely, how well Rosario has performed — that Boone would rather have McMahon come off the bench.”

McMahon is hitting .140 with 1 home run and 4 RBIs.

Boone Confirms McMahon Will be on Bench

Boone later confirmed Martinez’s report, as he said McMahon needs some time to work on some things.

“This is probably a stretch [where he won’t start] and he’s working on a lot of things behind the scenes that I actually feel like I’m seeing some progress on,” Boone explained. “We need him and expect him to be a real factor for us, not just defensively but offensively as well, so with these next several matchups being a little more difficult, probably be a lot of Rosey in there. While McMahon continues to kind of work through it.”

Boone said McMahon needs to be more square with his shoulders so he can rotate more easily and make harder contact with the ball.

But, with McMahon struggling, it does lead to rumors of the Yankees making an addition at third base.
