Yankees Trade Idea Lands Rockies’ $50 Million Pitcher to Solve David Bednar, Camilo Doval Issue

There has been no lack of coverage this season about how the New York Yankees need bullpen help. With such a strong starting rotation, the Yanks can’t afford to have their season blown away by a bad bullpen, and David Bednar and Camilo Doval are starting to falter as high-leverage relievers.

One name that has started to surface in trade talks is Colorado Rockies‘ reliever Antonio Senzatela.

Mike Axisa of CBS Sports recently wrote:

“In Antonio Senzatela’s case, he’s added a cutter, which he is using in tandem with his sinker to limit hard contact more than miss bats. It’s also helped that Senzatela has gained three ticks of velocity with the move to the bullpen. There were times in the last few years when Senzatela appeared to be on the verge of getting released. Now he’s a trusted high-leverage reliever with tangible reasons to believe in the improvement.”

Should the Yankees Pursue Antonio Senzatela?

Antonio Senzatela is enjoying one of the best seasons in his MLB career thanks to a recent change to the Rockies’ bullpen.

He’s on an expiring contract (five-year, $50 million deal), and the Rockies would certainly be okay with acquiring any sort of projectable player for Senzatela, who they likely won’t be able to resign anyway.

For the Yankees, they really need another leverage right-handed arm in the bullpen, and Antonio Senzatela may be able to solve some problems. In a return deal, the Yankees could offer a prospect like Ben Hess or Chase Hampton to get a deal done.

As a MLB reliever this season, Senzatela has been nearly perfect. He’s pitched 34.2 innings over 17 appearances and holds an ERA of 1.30 with a 5-0 pitching record and three saves.

He’s making quite a case to be the hottest commodity on the reliever trade market this summer, and is a name the Yankees need to consider making a call on.

Aside from maybe a backup catcher and a corner infielder (third base), the most glaring need for the Yankees this trade deadline is bullpen help. Antonio Senzatela can help solve some of those issues.
