Yankees Players Pitched Higher-Ups About Wearing Alternate Jerseys on the Road

New York Yankees players have pitched the team’s higher-ups about potentially wearing alternate jerseys on the road.

According to Yankees reporter Brendan Kuty from The Athletic, players approached team higher-ups about using its navy batting practice jerseys during occasional road games. Right now, the Yankees only have two official jerseys: their famous white with blue pinstripes jersey for home games, and a gray jersey for away games. If this proposal goes through, it would be the first time in Yankees history that the team has allowed its players to wear an alternate third jersey.

At this point, the Yankees are the only MLB team that does not have an alternate jersey, as the Los Angeles Dodgers recently added an alternate blue road uniform to go along with their road grays. The Yankees are also the only team in MLB besides the Athletic who do not have a City Connect jersey.

Hal Steinbrenner Will Decide Fate of Alternate Jerseys

According to the report, the decision to bring in an alternate third jersey will come down to Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner, who, as the report notes, has been open to change in recent years. In 2025, the Yankees got rid of their ban on facial hair, which had been in place for 50 years. In 2024, the franchise slightly altered its road gray jerseys. In 2023, the team added a sponsor patch to their jerseys. So, they certainly seem to be willing to make slight changes.

New York Yankees Currently Lead the American League East

The Yankees currently lead the AL East during the early goings of this season, as the team has a 14-9 record through its first 23 games of the year. Last season, the Yankees had an identical record to the Blue Jays, but lost the tiebreaker for the division as the Blue Jays won the season series. The Blue Jays then eliminated them during the postseason to add to the wounds.

This year, though, the Bronx Bombers seem to be back. Outfielder Aaron Judge, the team’s captain, is having another big year, while utility player Ben Rice has been one of the league’s breakout stars. Outfielder Cody Bellinger and designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton have also added thump to the lineup, while the pitching staff has been solid too, with Max Fried, Ryan Weathers, Cam Schlittler, and Will Warren all having performed well so far. Plus, the team will get ace Gerrit Cole back this year after he missed last season, and Carlos Rodon is coming back, too.

All of this adds up to what appears to be another winning season for the Yankees, who are second behind the Dodgers to win the World Series in future betting odds, per DraftKings Sportsbook. The team already has all of the pieces necessary to make a long run in the playoffs, plus they will likely make a few moves at the trade deadline to strengthen the squad heading into the postseason. Perhaps one of those moves will include letting the players play in an alternate jersey on the road, which could help improve team morale.
