Yankees Named Top Landing Spot for Ex-Blue Jays 3.18 ERA Lefty

The New York Yankees are having a strong start to the 2026 season. They currently have a 26-16 record and are second in the American League East standings. However, they have been cooling off a bit as of late, as they have lost each of their last four games.

With how things have been going lately for the Yankees, it is fair to wonder if they will look to add to their roster. One of their biggest needs at this point in the season is more pitching depth. It would be wise for them to add at least one pitcher who can work in either the starting rotation or their bullpen.

Because of this, the Yankees are now being viewed as a potential fit for an intriguing left-handed pitcher who was just cut by the Toronto Blue Jays.

Yankees Named Potential Landing Spot for Recently Cut Blue Jays Pitcher Eric Lauer

In a recent article for Sports Illustrated, Patrick McAvoy looked at a handful of potential destinations for Eric Lauer. This came after Lauer was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays after a tough start to the season.

Among the teams that McAvoy listed as a potential landing spot for Lauer was the New York Yankees, and it makes sense when noting that they could use more pitching.

“The Yankees have certainly seen Lauer in action in the American League East. He made two appearances against the Yankees in the playoffs last season. The Yankees have a track record of taking veteran hurlers and turning them into the best versions of themselves. If there is a team out there that could turn Lauer around, it would be the Yankees,” Lauer wrote.

With the Yankees in need of pitching depth, it would be understandable if they took a chance on a solid pitcher Lauer. He would give them another option to work with for the bottom half of their pitching rotation. Yet, he also has experience as a reliever, so he could help the Yankees’ bullpen as well.

In eight appearances this season with the Blue Jays, Lauer had a 1-5 record, a 6.69 ERA, and 26 strikeouts. While he had a tough start to the season with Toronto, his stats from just last season show that he is a bounce-back candidate. In 28 appearances last season with the Blue Jays, he had a 9-2 record, a 3.18 ERA, and 102 strikeouts. With numbers like these, it would make a lot of sense if the Yankees took a gamble on him.

Yankees Should Be on the Hunt for Pitching Help

Whether it is Lauer or another pitcher, it is clear that the Yankees should be looking to improve their pitching depth between now and the trade deadline. This is especially so when noting that they have already dealt with injury trouble this season, and that has the chance of continuing as the season carries on.

It will be interesting to see if the Yankees end up being the team that lands Lauer from here, but the fit certainly looks strong on paper.
