Yankees Announce Top OF Prospect Spencer Jones Jersey Number

Newly promoted Yankees top outfield prospect and the Yankees’ No.6 overall prospect, left-handed hitting Spencer Jones, will wear No.78 with the team, according to the Yankees Public Relations Department. The announcement was made via the Yankees PR team on Twitter (X), following Jones’s promotion yesterday evening, which Francys Romero first announced.

First Yankee To Wear No.78 In Team History

Spencer Jones will be the first New York Yankee in history to wear the number 78, according to Francys Romero. There’s plenty of hype surrounding Jones, who was drafted by the Yankees in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft (25th overall) out of Vanderbilt University. Right away, people notice Jones impressive size, standing at 6’7 240 lbs. The 24-year-old, from his size alone, has received comparisons to the likes of Yankees great and current Captain Aaron Judge, whether that’s justifiable or not, that’s what the talk around town has been.

Along with his size, Jones hits for plenty of power. Through 33 games so far in 2026 at Triple A Scranton Wilkes Barre Jones is hitting for a .258 batting average with 11 home runs, 41 RBI’s, and a .958 OPS. Jones hit 35 home runs last year, combined between stints in Double A and Triple A.

The Power Is Jones Calling Card

The power is legit with Jones, and he can spray the ball to all fields. The one glaring concern (flaw) in Jones’ game is the strikeouts. Jones strikeout rate in the minor leagues has gotten as high as 36.8% in 2024, according to Fangraphs. Jones has lowered that strikeout rate, now sitting at around 35% most recently in Triple A last year and at 32% to begin this season, according to Fangraphs.

However, Jones is known as an excellent defender who moves well for a big guy. He could cover any of the three outfield spots and give much-needed DH days to some of the Yankees’ veteran outfielders, whether it be Cody Bellinger, Trent Grisham, or even Aaron Judge. If Jones can continue cutting down on the strikeouts, then it’s anyone’s guess as to what his ceiling could potentially be.

The Yankees will face a tough right-hander in Milwaukee tonight in Jacob Misrowoski, who features a blazing fastball averaging 99.3 mph, along with three plus off-speed pitches, including a slider, curveball, and change-up, according to Baseball Savant.

The Yankees will see lots of right-handed pitching within the coming days and weeks ahead. With Jasson Domínguez heading to the IL due to a shoulder sprain after hitting the left-field wall to make an incredible catch in Wednesday afternoon’s game, there will be plenty of opportunities ahead for Jones to get big-league reps with the Yankees.

Yankees Emerging Young Talent

It’s an exciting time for a Yankees team that seems to have a next-man-up mentality and a greater sense of urgency, with a winning team right now and the recent Volpe demotion to Triple A, with Jose Caballero playing well at shortstop. The Yankees have several exciting names coming up through their farm system, and Jones is one of them who will be making his big league debut, possibly tonight in Milwaukee.

With a Yankees team that has dealt with a bit of the injury bug to Giancarlo Stanton, Ben Rice and now Jasson Dominguez, they need all the help they can get.
