Jasson Dominguezâs return to the New York Yankeesâ lineup did not last long.
Shortly after New Yorkâs 9-2 win over the Texas Rangers on Thursday, Aaron Boone announced that the outfielder will be placed on the injured list with a low-grade AC sprain in his left shoulder.
âThat could be a few weeks,â Boone told YES Networkâs Meredith Marakovits.
Boone added that Dominguez underwent concussion tests, which came back negative.
In a corresponding move, the Yankees plan to call up outfielder Spencer Jones, according to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman. The 24-year-old Jones is rated by MLB Pipeline as the organization’s No. 6 prospect.
Dominguez Hurt Making Acrobatic Catch
Dominguez, playing outfield for just the second time this season, made an acrobatic grab on a liner by Brandon Nimmo before crashing into the left-field fence. The 23-year-old hit the wall hard enough that his sunglasses flew off as he fell to the warning track.
Dominguez was able to get up on his own but had to leave the field on a cart, visibly emotional.
âItâs tough,â right fielder Cody Bellinger said, via SNY. âIt was also a ball that didnât have a lot of hangtime, so he didnât have much time to read the wall. Obviously just a tremendous catch and a really unfortunate situation.â
Bellinger replaced Dominguez in left field, Amed Rosario shifted from third base to right and Ryan McMahon took over at third base.
The Yankees won 9-2 to improve to an Major League-best 26-12, tying the Atlanta Braves.
Dominguez Began Season in Minors
Dominguez, the former top prospect who was benched down the stretch of last season, was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on April 28. In eight games since the recall, Dominguez was 6-for-30 with one home run and four RBI at the plate. His homer, a two-run shot off right-hander Andrew Kittredge, came in an 11-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on May 3.
Last season, Dominguez slugged 10 homers with 47 RBI while slashing .257/.331/.388 in 123 games. He appeared in just one postseason game amidst concerns about his defense.
