Not everyone inside WWE is convinced that Brock Lesnar has retired.
The future Hall of Famer sparked retirement talks after leaving his MMA gloves and wrestling boots in the ring following his loss to Oba Femi at WrestleMania on Sunday, April 19.
When speaking on a recent episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that some within WWE aren’t sold that Lesnar has already retired. However, Meltzer did add the caveat that Lesnar is expected to step away from wrestling at some point in 2026.
“I will only say that based on people in WWE, they believe he’s not retiring yet, although he is retiring at some point probably this year,” Meltzer said. “I don’t know that anyone knows. This might be one of those things where everything is being kept quiet like the Seth Rollins thing (fake injury). A couple of people have mentioned it, that’s the belief. We’ll see. I’m not like saying that this is for sure because I don’t know if anyone knows for sure.”
After decades of being one of the WWE’s top stars, it’s hard to envision Lesnar bowing out after a sub-5-minute match, where he lost to Oba Femi. It seemed far more likely that the two juggernauts were gearing up for a long-running feud.
Brock Lesnar Could Still Have A Storyline With Oba
In a different episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer noted that the original plan was to have Oba Femi and Brock Lesnar locked in a full feud with each other. However, those plans were reportedly dropped in the weeks leading up to WrestleMania.
“At one point, they were actually going to do a (full) feud with Brock Lesnar and Oba Femi, but that was dropped weeks ago,” Meltzer said, h/t Wrestletalk. “At one point, this was not going to be a one-and-done.”
Instead, WWE fans have been left wondering whether they’ve seen the last of Lesnar in an in-ring role. If so, his retirement was incredibly anticlimactic for someone who has been such an important part of the company. Although AJ Styles’ final match also followed a similar trend, so it’s not unheard of.
Oba Femi Is WWE’s New Dominant Force
Regardless of what happens with Lesnar in the coming weeks or months, the fact remains that Oba Femi is the new dominant force in town. Sunday night was a passing of the torch moment.
Not only is Oba over with the entire WWE Universe, he’s also stacking up some big wins in the process. Interestingly, it seems that he and Roman Reigns may be on a collision course.
“I think tomorrow is a celebration,” Oba Femi said in a post-WrestleMania interview. “I think in the coming weeks, it’s an establishment of a new main event player. And I think at the end of the year, ‘The OTC’ can get some!”
Reigns has since responded.
“Oba had a big night,” Reigns said. “Oba, you gonna kill me? See, you seem still a little fresh in this business. You did a big thing tonight. But I’ve done that many times. And I’ve done it with the title on the line. I took it, and I defended it. Let’s see how you do through the summer…And then we’ll know if you can step up to the greatest of all time.”
Don’t look now, but The Ruler and The Tribal Chief may be on an inevitable collision course.
