WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas is less than two weeks away, but the match card is still under construction.
While WWE has already confirmed a dozen matches, including several championship bouts and a six-man ladder match, one blockbuster match has reportedly been scrapped from WrestleMania 42.
Cory Hays of Bodyslam recently reported that Gunther was originally slated to go one-on-one with Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas. However, WWE has since pulled the plug on the match.
The decision was fueled by an unexpected rib injury to the legendary luchador. Mysterio is currently recovering from fractured ribs on both his left and right sides. The injury occurred on the January 26 episode of Monday Night Raw during his singles match against Austin Theory.
With Rey Mysterio unable to compete, WWE has listed Seth Rollins as his replacement.

Former world champions collide at WrestleMania 42 as the “Career Killer” Gunther takes on the visionary Seth Rollins.
Despite the championship pedigree between the two fighters, the match announcement was met with disdain from fans, who expressed their frustration on social media.
“No storyline at all. Just throwing matches together,” said one fan.
“This makes no sense,” another added. “Yall just doing anything at this point.”
Many pointed to a lack of story build up for the fight, which dampens the hype surrounding the singles match.
“All that build up around the masked man just for it to derail into this,” someone commented on Instagram. “Yall would’ve been better off with [Seth] Rollins versus Paul Heyman.”
Others were a bit more sympathetic, understanding that the match is a byproduct of injuries to key stars.
“For anyone complaining that this makes no sense – this was a forced pivot. Both Rollins’ and Gunther’s planned opponents went down with injuries. This is legit the best case scenario and will probably be match of the weekend,” a fan weighed in.
Notably, Rollins was projected to take on Bron Breakker at WrestleMania 42. The two had been feuding since Bron Breakker and the Vision turned against Seth Rollins.
Unfortunately, Bron Breakker has been sidelined with injury during the Road to WrestleMania.
There’s no denying that Seth Rollins and Gunther are capable of putting on a show at WrestleMania 42. Still, it is a bit disappointing to see two massive stars so sloppily scheduled for the biggest event of the year.

For the second consecutive year, Vegas will host WWE’s biggest pay-per-view event at Allegiant Stadium.
In the past, WWE would change destination cities for WrestleMania each year, but there’s a reason why they doubled down on Sin City.
Money.
According to a report from Brandon Thurston at Post Wrestling and Wrestlenomics, WrestleMania 41 from inside Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas in 2025 pulled in $66,074,558 in ticket revenue. That makes the event the most lucrative pro wrestling event in the history of the industry.
This year, WWE looks to cash in again with another two-night WrestleMania extravaganza.
