The Toronto Blue Jays provided a concerning update on rookie star pitcher Trey Yesavage after his knee injury, raising new questions about whether the 23-year-old right-hander will return before the end of the season.
The organization’s latest update offers the clearest indication yet of where Yesavage’s recovery stands, but his visit with a knee specialist could determine whether one of baseball’s top young arms pitches again in 2026.
Yesavage was finishing his warmup tosses before the bottom of the third inning against the Houston Astros on Tuesday when his landing leg gave way beneath him. Blue Jays manager John Schneider and the training staff rushed to the mound, watched him throw one more pitch, then pulled him after just two scoreless innings.

“Trey felt a little pinch there in his left knee on his first couple of warmup pitches in the third,” Schneider said. “He said he was OK, but we’re not taking any chances,” as quoted by MLB.com reporter Keegan Matheson.
An MRI the following day initially pointed to inflammation, enough for Toronto to place Yesavage on the 15-day injured list and recall reliever Lazaro Estrada to cover bulk innings out of the bullpen. A closer look at the imaging Thursday turned up meniscus damage in the knee, a far more serious injury than the club first described, and one that changes Yesavage’s timeline.
Schneider confirmed Yesavage will fly to Texas on Monday to meet with a specialist who will map out next steps, including whether surgery is necessary.
“[Surgery] is always a possibility,” Schneider said, adding that the Blue Jays are hoping to avoid it, according to Sportsnet‘s Shi Davidi.
What Yesavage’s Absence Means for the Blue Jays
Even a clean bill from Monday’s exam likely means multiple weeks on the shelf, and a surgical repair would almost certainly end Yesavage’s season. A return around Sept. 11 is the current estimated target date, according to RotoWire‘s injury tracker, though that projection assumes Yesavage avoids surgery and responds well to rest. Monday’s exam appears likely to decide Yesavage’s fate, at least for 2026.
The rookie right-hander has been a bright spot for a Toronto pitching staff worn down by attrition, posting a 5-5 record with a 3.65 ERA and 91 strikeouts across 93 2/3 innings since returning from a right shoulder impingement that cost him the start of the season.
The Blue Jays overhauled their rotation at the trade deadline, shipping ace Kevin Gausman to the Chicago Cubs and bringing in Jameson Taillon and José Soriano, a swap designed to build a rotation around Yesavage. That plan lasted two innings before he walked off the Houston mound on Tuesday.
Toronto now leans on Dylan Cease, Soriano, Max Scherzer, Shane Bieber and Taillon to hold the rotation together in Yesavage’s absence, with Estrada and Chase Lee providing bullpen depth behind them.
Yesavage, Toronto’s 2024 first-round pick out of East Carolina, became a foundational piece of the staff almost immediately, setting a franchise postseason strikeout record during last year’s World Series run. Losing him now, even temporarily, strips away exactly the kind of swing-and-miss stuff a rotation already worn down by injuries can’t easily replace down the stretch.
Monday’s consultation will determine how much of that stretch run Yesavage actually watches from the dugout.
