Will Golden Tempo Run The Preakness After Kentucky Derby Win?

The 152nd Kentucky Derby took place on Saturday, and it was Golden Tempo who got the win.

Golden Tempo is trained by Cherie DeVaux, and with the win, DeVaux became the first female trainer to win the Kentucky Derby. She’s the second female trainer to ever win a Triple Crown event.

Following the win, one of the biggest questions is whether Golden Tempo runs the Preakness, which is set for May 16, and the second leg of the Triple Crown. However, owner Daisy Phipps Pulito wouldn’t confirm or deny whether they will run the Preakness.

“I don’t know yet. We will have to see how he comes out of the race, talk to Cherie and discuss that,” Pulito said on the broadcast.

The Kentucky Derby winner skipping the Preakness isn’t uncommon, as in 2025, Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty did not run in the Preakness. Trainer Bill Mott decided to skip the race to focus on the Belmont Stakes. This decision marked the fourth time in seven years since 2018 that the Derby winner bypassed the second leg of the Triple Crown.

So, it could very well be 50-50 if Golden Tempo decides to run at Preakness in just two weeks’ time. But if he does, Golden Tempo will look to win the second leg of the Triple Crown, which has only been accomplished 13 times. The last time was in 2018.

Golden Tempo Trainer Reacts to Kentucky Derby Win

Golden Tempo entered the Kentucky Derby as a moderate underdog, but the horse pulled off the upset after a bad start.

Despite the bad start, Golden Tempo was able to rally in the second half of the race to pull ahead for a nail-biter of a finish. Following the win, DeVaux who trains Golden Tempo said she didn’t have words on the win.

“I don’t even have any words right now. So, so happy for Golden Tempo. Jose (L. Ortiz) did a wonderful, masterful job. He had so much faith in this horse,” DeVaux said after the race on the broadcast.

DeVaux also became the first female trainer to win the Kentucky Derby. She was also the second female trainer to win a Triple Crown race, which was surreal to her.

“I honestly don’t know, but I’m glad I can be a representative for all women, that we can do anything we put our minds to,” DeVaux added.

Golden Tempo had an unofficial time of 2:02.27, and had odds of 23-1 to win the Kentucky Derby.

When Was The Last Triple Crown Winner?

Winning the Triple Crown in horse racing is extremely difficult, as it’s only happened 13 times.

The last horse to accomplish the feat was in 2018, which was accomplished by Justify. It came just three years after American Pharoah accomplished the feat in 2015.

The 13 horses to win the Triple Crown are as follows:

Sir Barton (1919)
Gallant Fox (1930)
Omaha (1935)
War Admiral (1937)
Whirlaway (1941)
Count Fleet (1943)
Assault (1946)
Citation (1948)
Secretariat (1973)
Seattle Slew (1977)
Affirmed (1978)
American Pharoah (2015)
Justify (2018)

If Golden Tempo runs the Preakness, he has a chance to accomplish the feat. But the horse would have to win two more races, which is difficult to do.
