Wildfire south of Las Animas sparks evacuations, closes Colorado highway

A fast-moving wildfire south of Las Animas shut down Colorado Highway 101 and sparked evacuation orders in the area Saturday, according to the Las Animas/Bent County Fire Protection District.

Evacuation orders are in place for east of Las Animas and Fort Lyon, the fire protection district stated on social media Saturday.

The fire is burning on 246 acres of land near Boggsville in Bent County with 0% containment, and crews from multiple fire agencies have responded to the scene, the fire protection district stated.

Colorado Highway 101 is closed south of Las Animas for the fire, the Colorado State Patrol announced on social media just before 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Warm, dry weather and red flag warnings across Colorado’s front range and eastern plains increased fire danger Saturday.

High winds and low humidity meant rapid rates of fire growth and spread were possible, NWS meteorologists stated.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
