During the April 8 solar eclipse, skywatchers in the Bay Area will be able to see partial obscuration of the sun. To do so safely requires eclipse glasses, a pinhole viewer or an optical device with the appropriate filter.

April’s total solar eclipse promises to be the best yet for experiments
Glasses that are certified safe for the viewing are being offered free at these places:
Warby Parker stores. The glasses retailer will give out up to two pairs per family for as long as supplies last. Its website also has instructions on making a pinhole viewer.
Some public libraries. Among those that have announced plans to distribute the glasses:
• San Jose Public Library. One pair per person, while supplies last, will be given out at SJPL branches during their regular operating hours on April 6 and April 7.
• San Mateo County Libraries. First come, first served, while supplies last. Note that not all libraries in the county are part of this 13-branch library system. For instance, the San Mateo Public Library has said it will not be giving out glasses.
In the Bay Area, the eclipse will peak around 11:13 a.m. Monday, with about 35% of the sun obscured. For more details, see environment reporter Paul Rogers’ guide.
